Lizzie Hanbury-Tenison Co-Founder of Cabilla Cornwall

Working and collaborating with exceptional Woman is one of my biggest joys. While developing The Wellness Concierge I knew I wanted to work alongside retreats and places of healing, restoration and nature. Cabilla fits all of this and so much more.

Lizzie is the co founder alongside her husband Merlin of the incredible Cabilla Cornwall, a restorative retreat space in North Cornwall. Lizzie has over a decade of senior leadership and finding a balance between city and countryside life has always been hugely important to her. The woods at Cabilla Cornwall have allowed her to mentally reset and gain perspective – she finds genuine joy in learning about the ingenuity of nature and its untold, mesmeric power. Moving to the wild beauty of Bodmin Moor is the realisation of years of dreaming; from there, she now operates as a freelance consultant and brand founder, alongside running Cabilla Cornwall with Merlin.

The Wellness Concierge work with Cabilla on all their retreats offering massage treatments so I knew talking to Lizzie about finding her own wellness would be so wonderful, I hope you enjoy.

What does wellness look like for you, what does it mean to you?

It is 100% about looking after my mind, I know that if my mind feels calm then I am capable of so much more.

How do you practice your version of wellness?

Mainly through meditating and aromatherapy as I need wellness tools that I can activate around a very dynamic schedule which includes juggling multiple start-ups and my children - it’s mad but I absolutely love it! Vedic meditation has changed my life (taught to me by the incredible Beeja School of Meditation), it keeps me feeling calm and able to prioritise with clarity. It keeps everything feeling in perspective which I think is important. Aromatherapy is another key tool that I have used consistently over the years, I believe in it so much and I always have an essential oil and a crystal in my handbag (my friends think I am mad)…the combinations can vary but I rarely leave home without them. Essential oils have supported me through some really difficult times, post-natal anxiety being one of the hardest, so I recommend them to everyone! Nature is so powerful.

What would you do if you had more time to focus on yourself?

I think I would travel more. I miss it! I also really crave creativity in my life and it isn’t always possible at the moment, so I think I would just want some time to think and dream a bit, I think having the time to dream is the greatest luxury – but that isn’t my day to day reality at the moment!

How do you spoil yourself?

A glass of red wine, a good audiobook, a bath with some beautiful essential oils in it. I think this means I am old now. Equally, we’re so lucky to live in Cornwall with beautiful coastlines a short drive away, so I love walking on the beach with our family. Hawkers Cove is my favourite.

Any nuggets of advice you would share with our readers?

If you possibly can, try to take a small amount of time each day for yourself, even if it is 5 minutes before you get everyone up and out of the house. 5 minutes to breathe deeply, to nurture and quieten your mind, to be kind to yourself and know that today is going to be a great day, it’s a really good use of time. A small but powerful trick I was taught, and I always feel great after doing it.
